Taunggoke University Comes Under Control of Arakan Army

The Arakan Army (AA), which is conducting military operations to fully seize control of the Arakan region, officially announced on November 28 that it has taken control of Taunggoke University in Taunggoke town, where junta soldiers were stationed.

Between November 4 and 20, the Arakan Army (AA) launched military offensives against 13 junta military camps in Taunggoke Township. Following the capture of junta troops stationed within the university, the AA successfully took full control of Taunggoke University.

Taunggoke University was originally established as Taunggoke College on February 23, 2012. It was later upgraded to Taunggoke Degree College on October 11, 2016.

Subsequently, Taunggoke Degree College was upgraded to Taunggoke University on September 1, 2020. The university is located near the Yangon-Kyaukphru highway, covering an area of 212.20 acres.

In the Arakan region, universities are located only in Sittwe Township and Taunggoke Township. Taunggoke University is the first university to come under the control of the Arakan Army (AA).

According to the junta’s General Administration records released on March 31, 2023, Taunggoke University had 271 faculty members and a total of 15,807 students enrolled during the 2022-2023 academic year.

Taungup Township spans 44 miles from east to west and 79 miles from south to north. It shares borders with Mintone and Pantaung Townships to the east, Rambre Township and the Bay of Bengal to the west, Thandwe Township to the south, and Ann Township to the north.

The Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government, led by the Arakan Army (AA), has been developing the Arakan education curriculum since 2019. It is reported that the curriculum will be uniformly implemented and taught across all territories under its control starting from the 2025-2026 academic year.

In the Arakan region, the Arakan Army (AA) is focused on launching offensives to capture the cities of Sittwe, Kyaukphru, and Manaung. Kyaukphru Township is home to a junta-run education college, while Sittwe Township has Sittwe University, a Computer University, and a Technology University.

The Arakan Army (AA) has reported that it is simultaneously launching military offensives against the 346th and 544th infantry regiments, including the 5th Military Operations Command, in an effort to fully capture and control Taunggoke Township, where Taunggoke University is located.
