Kyaukse, April 2
On March 28th, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck Myanmar, causing widespread damage. Following the powerful earthquake, the famous Shwegugyi (Kyaung Myat Chan Tha) pagoda, located near the Kyaukse and Sin Kine areas, collapsed into the Zawgyi River.
The Shwegugu pagoda, which was built by King Anawrahta as a place of worship, housed a sacred statue inside, and there, an ancient stone inscription has remained intact without any damage.
As a result of the earthquake, many historical and ancient monuments, including stupas and temples, were severely damaged and collapsed.
The earthquake, which had its epicenter 12 miles northeast of Mandalay, caused significant damage to historical structures in the Sagaing and Mandalay Regions. As a result, various ancient buildings collapsed.
Consequently, on March 28th, the military junta’s National Disaster Management Committee declared a state of emergency in the areas of Mandalay Region, Sagaing Region, Magway Region, Bago Region, northern Shan State, and Naypyidaw Council Zone.
