“We will only consider going back if the government ensures our safety, provides security, and grants us full citizenship.”

We are a group of Rohingya people who fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh. We have been living in Bangladesh for eight years now, and during this time, there has been little meaningful discussion about our return to Myanmar.

Since becoming Prime Minister, Dr. Yunus has been actively working on behalf of the Rohingya community in Bangladesh. He has even traveled abroad to advocate for our safe and dignified repatriation to Myanmar, and we are truly grateful for his efforts.

In the beginning, we were very hopeful about the possibility of returning home. However, there are important conditions that must be met. If the Myanmar government grants citizenship to the Rohingyas and allows us to return to our original villages under police protection, then we would seriously consider going back.

Without these guarantees, we fear for our lives, we may be in danger of being killed soon after our return.

We fled to Bangladesh in search of justice after being stripped of our land and property in Myanmar. Even if we were to return, we know we may never regain what we lost. The same oppressors who ruled over us for the past 80 years still hold power, and we cannot endure their cruelty again.

We sincerely appreciate Dr. Yunus’s efforts on our behalf. However, we will not return to Myanmar without strong guarantees from the government. We will only consider going back if the government ensures our safety, provides security, and grants us full citizenship.

Only under those conditions will we feel safe enough to return to our homeland.
