Camp-20, Cox’s Bazar June 1, 2025
A Rohingya refugee has died, and five others have been critically injured after a powerful thunderstorm struck the M8 block of Camp-20 earlier this afternoon.
The deceased was reportedly struck by lightning while outdoors as the storm swept through the area. The five injured refugees were caught in the same incident and are currently in critical condition, receiving emergency medical care.
Local residents described the storm as sudden and intense, with heavy rainfall and repeated lightning strikes hitting the overcrowded camp. Camp authorities and humanitarian organizations are on high alert as weather conditions continue to deteriorate.
“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers these families face every day, especially during extreme weather,” said one aid worker. “We are urging everyone to stay in safe shelters and avoid open spaces until the storm passes.”
Thunderstorms and flash floods pose a significant threat to the nearly one million Rohingya refugees living in fragile shelters across the camps. Emergency response teams are coordinating efforts to assist affected families and prevent further harm.
Residents are advised to remain indoors and closely follow safety instructions issued by camp management and local authorities.
