The Mro people in Maungdaw Township, which is under the control of the Arakan Army (AA), have expressed an urgent need for medicine and healthcare services, according to the Mro community.

In the Mro villages of Maungdaw Township, the Mro community reports a high prevalence of skin diseases, particularly affecting children and the elderly.

Due to the high prevalence of skin diseases, the Mro community has emphasized an urgent need for medical supplies and healthcare assistance.

“My daughter is suffering from skin diseases, affecting her palms and soles. The Arakan Army provides some medical assistance, but the medicines only relieve her symptoms for a day or two, and the illness returns. The medicines are insufficient, and we urgently need proper healthcare services,” a Mro woman from Maungdaw Township told Border News Agency.

On November 13, 2023, during the Three Brotherhood Alliance’s “Operation 1027,” including the Arakan Army (AA), the AA captured a junta border guard outpost on the Maungdaw-Ah Ngu Maw road. Following this, the junta blocked routes in the Arakan region and restricted international humanitarian aid access.

As a result, the Mro community reports that healthcare services, including medicines, have become extremely expensive in the Arakan region, with shortages of essential medicines becoming a serious issue.

The people of Arakan also report that the medicine shortages have led to the deaths of some children and elderly individuals in the region.

The Mro community in Maungdaw Township, who are using unclean water, report suffering from diseases such as diarrhea, skin diseases, and fevers. However, due to the lack of medicine, these illnesses have worsened.

“It could also be due to the unclean water. We go into the mountains and often return late, so we don’t pay enough attention to our wounds. As a result, these skin diseases have now spread throughout the whole village,” a Mro man from Maungdaw Township told Border News Agency.

Since 2021, the junta has blocked the transportation of medicines and restricted access for international humanitarian aid organizations in the Arakan region. As a result, the people of Arakan have been facing severe medicine shortages.

Although the Arakan People’s Revolutionary Government provides healthcare services in areas controlled by the Arakan Army, the people of Arakan report that due to a shortage of healthcare workers and insufficient medicines, they are still not receiving adequate healthcare.
