Bangladesh, 3 May 2025.
The interim government of Bangladesh has labeled recent statements from various political parties regarding the proposed humanitarian corridor in Myanmar’s Rakhine State as “immature and irresponsible.”
In a press note issued by the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser’s Office, the government emphasized that such remarks could hinder the country’s diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing Rohingya crisis. The statement came in response to calls by several political leaders urging the establishment of a humanitarian corridor in Rakhine to ensure aid delivery and facilitate safe repatriation for the Rohingya population.
“The government is deeply engaged in diplomatic efforts with regional and international partners. Uninformed and premature comments from political parties’ risk jeopardizing the progress made so far,” the press release stated.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to finding a peaceful and sustainable solution to the crisis. “Our priority is to create a safe and dignified environment in Rakhine through diplomatic means. Any discussions on humanitarian corridors must be aligned with broader international consensus,” he said.
The government has been in ongoing talks with the United Nations and other stakeholders to ensure voluntary repatriation of the Rohingya community, who fled violence in Myanmar and are currently residing in camps in Cox’s Bazar.
The press note concluded with a call for political unity and responsibility, urging all parties to refrain from making statements that could complicate sensitive negotiations or mislead the public.
Over 1 million Rohingya refugees currently live in Bangladesh, and any sustainable solution to their crisis remains a priority for the interim administration.
