A tragic incident of domestic violence occurred this evening in the Rohingya refugee camps, as a husband brutally killed his wife inside their shelter. The incident happened around 8:15 PM in Block D-12 of Camp-2W.
The accused, Sawyed Alom (27), a Site Management Support (SMS) volunteer with ACTED Organization who had been working in Camp-2W for the past two years, allegedly killed his wife, Ayesha Khatun (25), following a heated argument.
According to eyewitnesses, after returning from Moghrib prayer, Sawyed entered his shelter for dinner and soon began scolding his wife. Their argument lasted for nearly an hour, during which neighbors heard Ayesha crying and screaming for help, along with their children. Sawyed was heard shouting, “I will kill you!” Moments later, he reportedly slaughtered her with a kitchen knife. Ayesha died instantly.
Neighbors and community members reported that Sawyed had a history of online betting, particularly on the platform 1xBet and drug abuse. The couple had been engaged in frequent domestic disputes over the past two months, largely due to these issues.
Immediately after the attack, Sawyed attempted to flee, but community members and local volunteers quickly acted. He was apprehended shortly after the incident and is now in police custody.
The head Majhi of the block is Nur Mohammad, and the Sub-Majhi is Hedayot Ullah.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the case. Community leaders and residents are demanding justice for Ayesha and calling for increased action against gambling, drug abuse, and gender-based violence in the camps.
This horrific act serves as a wake-up call for stronger protection measures to ensure the safety and dignity of all individuals in the refugee community.
