Kutupalong ,Cox’s Bazar – 18 June 2025:

Amid ongoing monsoon rains, more than seven Rohingya families residing in Camp-2W, D Block, have been temporarily relocated to safer areas after their shelters were affected by flooding. The move comes as part of urgent efforts to protect vulnerable populations from the worsening impact of the seasonal monsoon crisis in the refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar.

According to local sources and camp volunteers, continuous rainfall over the past few days led to waterlogging and partial damage to several makeshift shelters in low-lying parts of D Block. With growing concerns about the safety and well-being of the residents particularly children, women, and the elderly. Camp authorities and humanitarian partners coordinated an emergency response to move the affected families to higher ground and safer communal shelters.

“This action was taken to ensure the immediate protection of these families, especially as the heavy rains are expected to continue,” said a camp volunteer involved in the relocation process. “We are working closely with the relevant agencies to provide them with food, clean water, and medical support.”

The families, who had to leave their homes with little time to prepare, are now being hosted in temporary shelters where they are receiving basic assistance. Humanitarian organizations on the ground are monitoring the situation closely and assessing further needs to prevent any health hazards or displacement-related distress.

The relocation reflects a broader strategy by humanitarian actors in the camps to respond swiftly to natural disasters, which are known to severely impact the densely populated and infrastructure-vulnerable refugee settlements during the monsoon and cyclone seasons.

Camp residents expressed concern over future rain forecasts, with many urging for more durable shelter support and improved drainage systems. “Every year, when the rain comes, we fear for our lives. Our children cannot sleep peacefully,” said a displaced father from D Block. “We thank the people who helped us move, but we hope for a long-term solution.”

This incident is a reminder of the persistent challenges faced by Rohingya refugees living in fragile conditions, and it highlights the importance of continued support from the international community to ensure their safety, dignity, and resilience during times of crisis.
