The Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) has imposed a ban on unregistered and unauthorized vehicles inside the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar in an effort to maintain safety, discipline, and order.
According to a directive issued by the RRRC office, all vehicles operating within the camps including motorcycles, CNG-run auto-rickshaws, battery-operated rickshaws and vans, private cars, microbuses, pickups, and trucks must have valid registration and proper authorization.
The RRRC emphasized that unregistered vehicles, particularly motorcycles, have become a growing concern, often contributing to security risks and disorder within the densely populated camps. The authorities have stated that any unauthorized vehicle found in operation will be seized, and legal actions will be taken against the owners or drivers involved.
“To maintain peace and discipline in the camps, this measure is necessary,” the RRRC said in its statement, urging full cooperation from residents and humanitarian organizations working in the area.
The order also highlights that no vehicle should be driven without a valid license and registration. Humanitarian agencies and service providers operating in the camps are instructed to ensure that all vehicles under their operation comply with the new directive.
With over one million Rohingya refugees residing in the camps, mostly in Ukhiya and Teknaf upazilas of Cox’s Bazar, the new regulation is seen as a step towards improving law and order, and ensuring the safety of both refugees and aid workers.
Camp authorities have begun implementing the order through checks and monitoring and have warned that strict enforcement will follow.
