The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), during its ongoing 59th regular session in Geneva, has unanimously adopted a significant resolution addressing the protracted Rohingya crisis in Myanmar.

The resolution, titled “Situation of Human Rights of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar,” was adopted by consensus and reflects strong international support for justice, accountability, and humanitarian access for the Rohingya community and other affected minorities in Rakhine State.

The motion was tabled by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on behalf of the countries concerned and was supported by a broad range of UN member states.

 Focus Areas of the Resolution:

  • Accountability for serious human rights violations against Rohingya Muslims.
  • Safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.
  • Unhindered humanitarian access to affected regions in Rakhine State.
  • Inclusion of Rohingya in discussions on their future and local governance.
  • Condemnation of violence by all parties, including the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA).

Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Tareq Md Ariful Islam, played a key role during the adoption of the resolution. In his statement, he highlighted the alarming situation in Rakhine State due to the escalating armed conflict between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army, which has further deteriorated the humanitarian conditions.

He said that the ongoing crisis has forced over 118,000 Rohingya to flee their homes since November 2023. Bangladesh, already hosting more than one million Rohingya refugees, expressed deep concern over the increasing burden and called for stronger international responsibility-sharing and enhanced support.

Ambassador Islam urged the international community to take concrete steps for the safe and sustainable return of the Rohingya to their homeland and called for the full implementation of recommendations made by various UN bodies. He also emphasized that accountability must remain central to any long-term solution.

The resolution reiterates the international community’s unified stance on the urgency of protecting Rohingya rights and ensuring justice for victims of mass atrocities committed in Myanmar, particularly during the 2017 military crackdown that led to a mass exodus into Bangladesh.

A High-Level Conference on the Rohingya Crisis is expected to take place in New York in September 2025, where countries will be urged to make concrete commitments toward resolving the crisis.

Myanmar’s Rakhine State has witnessed widespread violence and ethnic cleansing, particularly against the Rohingya Muslim minority. The situation has worsened since the military coup in 2021 and the growing conflict between the junta and ethnic armed groups like the Arakan Army.

The UN resolution comes amid increasing international calls for the prosecution of Myanmar military leaders for crimes against humanity and genocide.
